TítuloBrazilian science going international: Analyzing the impact of translation from Portuguese to English

ResumoAs a result of actions towards a more globalized world, Brazilian scientific community has been making efforts to increase their participation in the international scientific community. Thus, a series of measures were taken to intensify the contact among national and international researchers. In this research the international circulation of the scientific production, which consists of the dissemination of scientific findings not only in the local language, that is, Portuguese, but also in English, through the practice of translation is emphasized. From a linguistic point of view, there is still much to be considered in terms of the elements involved in the translation process of academic-scientific articles, and many questions remain to be answered, considering that: (a) many Brazilian researchers are known not to be fluent in English; (b) the scientific-academic genre, as socially based, demands knowledge of rules that may be different from the ones in the source language system; (c) the majority of journals do not provide sufficient information on how translations must be done or evaluated; and, (d) there is not a clear perception of the target readership of the articles when translated, since they are addressed to an international readership. Considering those elements, the objective of this study is to analyze the effects resulting from the translation process of scientific articles from Portuguese to English published in three Brazilian journals of the area of Language Studies, in the years of 2015 and 2016. Five excerpts are analyzed in this paper, focusing mostly on the suppression and inclusion of terms and their impact in the translated text. The results show that the alterations – being the absence of certain terms or the inclusion of others – have an impact in the authorial gesture, acting to erase the author’s voice or to let the translator’s voice be heard.
